CALCUTTA, May 13
The first and second brigades of MajorGeneral Willcocks' force have entered the Mohmand country.
They followed the Gandao route, which was adopted by General Elles during the campaign of 1897.
Owing to the prevalence of cholera in the camps of -the Northumberland and iMunster Regiments the white troops engaged in the renewed campaign are exclusively Seaforth Highlanders.
[The occupation of the Mohmand country has followed their refusal to assemble to hear the terms of peace. General Elles co-operated with Sir Bindon Blood in the Malakand campaign of 1897-8, and assisted in putting down the Mohmand rising. He was subsequently military member of the Viceroy's Council, and played an important part in the controversy between Lords Kitchener and Curzon on Indian defence policy In the end General Elles resigned his position on the Council, and the Viceroy was compelled to subordinate his views to the policy of the Comniand,er-in-Chief.]
