SECULAR EDUCATION AND CRIME.

(To the Editor.) • Sir,—l notice that a Catholic priesi is reported to have staged that there is a prevalence of juvenile crime amongst New Z«aianders, and that this was caused by secular education. . Now what is tha fact? Native New Zealanders contribute a considerably smaller percentage to our prisons than New Zealanders born out of the colony. The New Zealand born over 15 years of age form 56 per cent of the colony,, but only 31 per cent of the prisoners are New Zealand torn! So much' for the reverend gentleman's facts! His conclusion fails'""with' the failure of his premise. Sly sole ■ desire is to vindicate' the young New Zealander and our system of education, and not to create any sectarian controversy, oe bitterness; otherwise, statistics relating to the religious professions of the prisoners in our gaols and inmates of our. hospi- ' tals and benevolent institutions: might be quoted in further refutation of the aspersions cast upon our national schools,—l am, etc^ ENQUIRER.
