AUSTRALIAN CABLES.
PAPER FROM 'SUGAR CANE. BRISBANE, March 27. In reference to yesterday cable Dr. Maxwell, Director of the Sugar Bureau, [says that there is nothing new in the I statement that megass can be used in paper-making- It was tried in Louisiana years ago, but he believed proved too expensive. He ridiculed the idea that sugar cane could be profitably cultivated for the sake of the megass alone. THE RETURNED KANAKAS. (Received 10.59 a.m.) SYDNEY, this day. The Bishop of Melanesia, interviewed, I stated that the idea that the returned Kanakas would be killed had proved to be erroneous. There were a number who were afraid to return because they had been concerned in murders before they went to Queensland, otherwise their repatriation would have been welcomed. The compulsory return had proved to fie the best thing for them. Their experience in Queensland had made one difference, however, —it had exaggerated the idea of the value of their labour, and had led them to think that the land which they bought should realise prices ruling in Queensland. It was impossible now to gei men ioi the work ai tue old prices.
