THE POULTRY MARKET.

LOCAL CONSUMPTION DISPLACING EXPORT TRADE.

Mr. D. D. Hyde, chief poultry expert, will visit Auckland at the end of the month to judge the competitive exhibits of poultry prepared for the London market, for which an Auckland committee has arranged to give prizes. No second judging will take place when the birds reach London, as was at first proposed, but arrangements will be made by Mr. Hyde for an expert to inspect and report on them at London according to the English standards. Rather meagre entries, which closed on Saturday last, have been received for the competition. The reason ascribed for this is that prices ranging on the local market have practically killed the export trade. One local exporter had 500 birds in the freezing stores, awaiting shipment, but was offered 10d per lb locally, and so disposed of the birds to Auckland buyer 3. Throughout the Christmas season the local demand was far greater than the supply, and the demand keeps up, with the result that there is no inducement for growers to consign their birds Home. A meeting of the committee in charge of the arrangements of the competition will be held nest week, to consider the position.
