RUSSIA'S OVERCROWDED PRISONS.

Hundred and Forty Confined. (Received 5.14 a.m.) ST. PETERSBURG, January 5. A census of the prisons throughout Eussia shows that there are now 140,000 persons confined for various crimes and misdemeanours, political and otherwise. Many of the prisons are horribly overcrowded, the total being no less than 34,000 beyond the number the prisons could possibly accommodate, having regard to sanitation and hygiene.
