The following letter signed by .* number of Maoris was read at the meeting of the City Council last niglrt: ~*| Sewerage and Drainage. Your letter oi the 20th inst. received, stating V** the Natives desire to discuss the above matter the City Council will he pleased to receive a deputation for that Your letter has been submitted to tne meeting of the Maori owners of Orakeblock on the sth inst, and the position was carefully considered, and in reply 1 am directed to state that the Maori owners do hereby repeat their protest a°ainst the carrying out under any circumstances of your Council's intention. Further, seeing by the plan and repoit of Messrs. Tavlor and Son, engineers, that the line of drainage will with the Native graveyard and Native Settlement, the Natives have no intention to discuss the matter before the City Council as the whole matter is quite clear to them without having further particulars, as it was clearly shown by the plan, and report of the City Drainage Scheme. As we said before, the whole idea is Tepugnant to the feelmg of the Maoris, and we will support the scheme of the Clean Harbour League and -the motion ot Mr. Johns and Mr. G. W. Baslev, of Parnell, who say that the best possible outlet is right out-into the ocean, say on the west coast." The Mayor said he was pleased to see that the Maoris had amongst them an engineer who could advise tthem on such a momentous question. He. (the Mayor) had explained the position to Dr." Pomare (Native Hearth Officer)', who was evidently quite ignorant of the intention of the Council. Dr. Pomare said he would inform the Natives, and when Mr. Bush had completed his comprehensive report on the whole question he would then get a deputation of Maoris to meet the Council, when they could go into the whole matter. The letter was received.
