FREEHOLD LANDS
AN INTERESTING RETURN.

WELLINGTON, Thursday,
A valuable return containing a mass of information relating to the freehold lauds of the colony was presented to Parliament, to-day. It must be borne in mind by those who make a study of the figures that it is stated that the tables relate solely to lands which are the freehold of companies and individuals. The lands owned by the Crown, Natives, local bodies, churches, educational bodies, friendly societies and other puulic bodies are not included, nor do the lessees of any lands appear in the tables.
The first table covers freehold land (classified according to capital or improved value) held at March 31, 1900. It is shown that the total capital value of all freehold lands amounts to the enormous sum of £161.771.753, distributed between 125.01H Individuals. Of these 82,951 are the owners of town lands solely, 38,875 are the owners of country lands solely, a.id 13193 own both town and country lands. The following return shows the unimproved value of land held by freeholders, the number of owners and the extent of their holdings.

Another table classifies freeholders according to the unimproved value otf land owned by them at 31st .March last. This is important in view of the increase proposed by the Government in th& graduated "tax above £40,000.
