At a meeting oi the Auckland hardware and ammunition importers and dealers, held to-Jay, a resolution ! •was passed, protesting against the I proposed invrease of duty on | cartridges and cartridge cases, and I pointing out that the proposed rate on j the former, of 2/6 per 100, is equal to 60 i per cent on British cartridges, and 80 per cent on foreign. The meeting cod- ' siucred that the industry was already' well protected by the old 'rate of 1/(5 per I 100, which is equal to 35 per cent, the : heavy freight charges making an additional 9 per cent. It was stated that the increase will be severely felt by the public, and especially by country settlers, as the enormous multiph'eation in the number of rabbits during the last lew years renders ammunition an absolute necessity.
