The officer in charge of the Auckland Telegraph Office notifies the public that the cables connecting Shanghai with Japan are interrupted. Telegrams for Japan and Corea are forwarded via Vladivostock, but are subject to delay. Correspondence may also be forwarded via America. Trial football matches will be played at Thames on Saturday, in view of the representative match to be played against Auckland in the following week, also a schoolboys , rep, match, Auckland v. Thames, at Auckland.

Our Hamilton correspondent wires that another fire occurred there last night in a three-roomed unoccupied cottage owned by Mr. Sibley, carpenter, and situated about one mile from the township. The owner had been working on the horae during the afternoon, and when he left at six o'clock, everything was apparently safe. Tie house carried an insurance in the Sooth. British for £100.

"It's not all beer and skittles being a pound-keeper," was the comment on a story told at a recent meeting of a local authority (says the "Timani Herald"). The pound-keeper of the district had impounded some horses. Before morning there came a knock at his door, and he was asked to come out. When he opened his door a cloth was thrown over his head and an attempt was made to drag him out; but this he successfully resisted, and shnt out his assailant. When he went out he found the horses gone, the pound-gate chain having been cut with a cold chisel.
