AMUSEMENTS.

MISS- JESSIE MACHLACHAN. Another programme of Scottish musical gems by Miss Jessie Maclachlan and her company was gTeeted last evening by an audience which on several occasions reached a state of enthusiasm that demonstrated how Scotch music —when so ably expounded as last evening—will irresistibly appeal to its hearers of whatever ilk. Miss Maclachlan chose for her numbers last night songs for the most part of a distinct martial strain, and her fine voice vibrated with the very instinct of passionate fervour in that splendid vocalised story, " Angus Macdonald'."' and in the well-known Jacobite song. "Cam' ye by Athol?" '■Loch Lomon'~. preceded by a brief outline of the attending legend, was invested with a soft- and touching pathos in striking contrast to the verve exhibited in. the more florid numbers, displaying the singer's wide versatility of vocalisation. In the second half "the duet with Mr. Douglas Young. " I've Wandered in Dreams," received a notable rendering. Hiss Maclachlan reponded to the imperative and repeated recalls ■with, the utmost good nature, delighting her hearers -with encores more numerous than the listed pieces. Mr. Douglas Young's haunting and flexible tenor kept the audience enthralled with the items. " The Irish Emigrant." " The Standard on the Braes o' Mar," and " Meet mc on the Gowan Lea." Mr. John McLinden contributed another series of masterly "celio solos, while Mr. R. Buchanan's accompaniments were in his usual finished style. An entirely new programme will be submitted to-morrow evening. OXEILL'S BtXKJUMPERS. O'Neill's Butkjnmpers attracted another large attendance to Freeman's Bay last evening, when the usual extensive and varied programme was presented. A feature of the entertainment was a competition, open to local amateurs, for riders on an untamed buckjumper. There being a large number of entries, it was decided to hold two heats, the first of which resulted in a win for Mr. W. Newman, a resident of the Bay of Plenty. The second heat and final will take place to-night. The prize is a valuable gold medal presented by Mr. A. Kohn. On Saturday next, the fir=t and onJy matinee of the season will Ibe held, and ladies and children will be admitted at specially reduced prices.
