At the meeting of the Auckland A. and P. Association yesterday reference was made by Mr. Dick to the charges recently made against the Railway Department in regard to the storage and carriage of dairy produce -and stock. Statements had been made to the effect that butter had been frequently stored in trucks totally unsuited for the purpose, and that the produce had become tainted. After investigation Mr. Dick had found that there was absolutely no foundation for the allegations. He had interviewed both Mr. Waite of the Bailway Department, and Mr. Thornton, dairy produce grader, and had ascertained from the latter that the- produce had invariably throughout the season, arrived at its destination in good condition. It had only once occurred that butter had been stored in unsuitable trucks, and that had been due to an insufficiency of vehicles, while the journey in that case was a short one. Mr. Dick said that as the statements had been made openly, he desired that they be openly retracted, and the Department freed from any blame in the matter.
