ATHLETICS.

The Australasian Union came in for | a rather severe handling at the meeting of the X.Z.A-A.A. on Thursday last owing to the discourteous treatment received by New Zealand in connection with its request last November for an immediate mail vote on suggested amendments to the reinstatement rules (says "Sprinter" in "The canterbury Times.") Seven months have now elapsed since that mail vote was asked for, and up to the present no reply has been received from Australia. I drew attention to this matter last week, and judging by the tone of the Council's discussion on Thursday, members are beginning to "wonder whether they themselves could not adjust any grievous hardship* contained in the reinstatement Tules far more expeditiously than a body separated from New Zealand by 1200 miles of ocean. The yoke of Australian government is beginning to chafe in real earnest, especially on the shoulders ot those who are independent enough and patriotic enough to think that Maori land affairs could best be managed by Maorilanders.

In American aquatic circles—and possibly in Australasia —opinions have been expressed as to the desirability of sending representatives to the great annual aquatic meeting on the Thames —Henley Regatta. Such international representation has, however, been made impossible by the following resolutions just passed by a special meeting of the stewards of Henley Regatta.—

1. "An amateur may not receive any contribution towards his expenses in competing at the regatta except from the club he represents, but it shall be open to any bona-fide member of such club to contribute to the club funds for the above purpose."

2. "" In view of the proposed regatta , in connection with the Olympic Games being held in England in 190S, no entry from outside the United Kingdom be accepted for Henley Regatta in that year, and that the rules admitting such entries be suspended for the year 190 S. so as to give effect to the foregoing resolution."

Mr. T. Gilfedder. secretary of the New Zealand Athletic Union, has been removed to Auckland.
