AN EXEMPLARY CORRECTIVE.
SIS MONTHS FOR DISGRACEFUL CONDUCT. A young man named Edward Allcock was charged at the Police Court this morning (before Messrs. E__«ser and A. H. Russell, J.P.s), with disorderly conduct, and using obscene language in Kel-vin-street yesterday. The accused's father (an old man of about seventy years) complained that yesterday afternoon he came home in a drunken state, assaulted him, and used filthy language to him. When accused was told that he would not be allowed to enter the house, he threatened to burn it down. His son had been given opportunities to mend' his ways until he had well-nigh broken his mother's heart. Sometimes, said the aged parent, he would be all right for several months, and then would break out again, and get into mischief with a lot of blackguardly companions down Freeman's Bay way. In one week he would spend all the money which his mother banked for him instead of taking it for his board. Recently she had, thinking ha was reforming, transferred a banking account of £23 to him, and he had drawn it out and squandered the lot in one week. They had become hopeless about him, and had decided never to have him back home again. On Monday of this week he had pawned his clothes, on Tuesday he came home without his boots, and on Wednesday he went away in a suit of his brother's, and returned clad in a garment of rag 3. '" Such as you now see him in," concluded the old man.
The. subject of this damning evidence leaned casually the while against the dock rail, and at its conclusion expressed a desire to take the first boat to Sydney. He didn't want to go back home. All he wanted of them was his clothes. The Bench considered that he was a callous and utterly disgraceful son, and decided that before his trip to Sydney he should serve three months' imprisonment on each of the two charges preferred against him.
