THE SUGAR BOUNTIES.

Motion for -.eduction Lost

LONDON, July 10. In the House of Commons, Mr. Harold Cox (Liberal member for Preston) moved for a reduction in tbe sugar duties by one-half, denouncing them as a tax on food and raw material.

The Chancellor of the Exchequer (Mr. H. Asquith) replied that the duties had been imposed as part of a scheme for broadening the basis of taxation. Personally, he regarded the tax as oppressive and iniquitous, but he was unable at present to sacrifice six millions of revenue without dislocating the Budget. The motion was negatived, on the following division:— For the motion _ 175 Against • - 312 The minority consisted of Unionist Labour members, Nationalists, and 12 Liberals.
