Vickery, Tauranga; Lillie Walker, Warkworth: Henrietta Webb, Aratapu District High School. _f The chairman (Mr. L. J. Bagnall), remarked that the percentage of passes was very unsatisfactory. The examiners in music reported:— "Having been favoured with the conduct, of this examination since September, 1900, I have come to the conclusion that, wherever one-quarter of the ' amount of work given to English or any other subject has been given" to this subject, all have done well, and everyone who can hear can soon learn t<9 distinguish one note from another and -write them - down. 'It takes much longer time to learn to distinguish the slight inflections- of the vowels and consonants. No ear simply j means no application. I have had so I many excuses in the examination room iof the teachers having 6ore throats that j I should have liked to have had yonr per- ( mission to have quoted to the teachers when giving them their ear tests colleci tively the words of Sir Morell Mackenzie. M-D.," 5 page 162, and Dr. Lennox Browne, at one time senior surgeon to the Central London Throat and Ear Hospital, that school teachers .are subject to sore throat from so niueh. nse. and that when ont of school they' should therefore rest their voices when they can and breathe through their nostrils when not singing or speaking: and these doctors tell ns that singing is so good for health, for singing a prolonged note discharges the deadly carbonic acid' gas from the lowest part of the longs."
The needlework examiners in their report state: —
"The sewing at the 1907 examination is very similar to that of last year. The candidates, as a whole, show rather better work, but there are a few, specimens sent in, any one of which would he a disgrace to a standard 111. child. The seeocdvenr pupil teachers do not show the im--1 "provement that should be expected from tl»eir longer experience, some of their work rnniparing unfavourably with that of the 'candidates. The cutting out still shows that the girls do not practise this feature jas they ought to do. and it also argues a decided want of observation, and a lack of common sense. This same lack of cornman sense is also- shown in the careless manner in which some have read the spending a large portion •of i their time in useless work at the consequent expense of that which would earn marks." _______________
