A RANSACKED TOOL-SHED.

SIX MONTHS' IMPKISONMENT.

'A middle-aged man, named John Everett, was charged before Mr Dyer, S.M., at the-Police Court this morning with having, between the evening of March, 28 and the morning of the 30th, stolen a number of carpenters' tools stored in a shed by workmen engaged on the new building that is'being erected for the Northern Eoller Milling Company. in Quay-street. Chief-Detective Marsack said that in knocking off work on March 28th last the workmen engaged on the building stored and locked their tools in an improvised, shed in Quay-street, and on returning on the morning of the 30th to resume work they found that the shed door had been broken open and. the tools stolen. The majority of the tools, •were; subsequently found in three , pawnshops. . Kohert P. Hansen, one of the carpen* ters, Said they left their tools' in a shed' on the ground upon which the building was going up at about 5 o'clock on the 2Sth. On the morning of the 30th of March, upon going down to start work, they found that the door of; the shed had been prized open, and the shed rifled of the tools. Witness identified a number of tools, produced, as belonging to himself and a mate named Albert. . A number of the other men employed on the building also identified various kits among the collection of tools as being their respective properties. Louis Mendelssohn, pawnbroker, ;stated that the accused took a number of tools to him and pledged them for 13/ on March 30th last. He had had previous dealings with the man, who he knew as John Everett.' John Olsen, pawnbroker, Elliott-street, also identified accused as a man to whomhe advanced money-upon some tools, on March 30th last. Accused said that he wanted a little temporary assistance until he received his wage, and that the tools he was pledging were his. own. Maurice Copeland was another pawnbroker from whom Everett received accommodation on a number of tools. Accused had .nothing, to. say for •himself beyond an attempt to discredit the evidence of the witness Oleen. Mr Marsack remarked that he had already served' a term for houseßreaking, and he was promptly sent to Mount Eden Gaol for six months on the first charge, -and three months on the other seven counts, the terms to run concurrently. . .
