AWANUI IN A GALE.
SURE BOAT AND DECK "FIXINGS CARRIED AWAY. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) GISBORNE. this day. The schooner Awanui arrived this morning from Mercury Bay, after a rough trip. On Tuesday last she ran into Whangaparoa roadstead, but early on the following morning she commenced to drag anchors, and had to get under weigh, and beat out clear oi the land.
The barometer fell to 25.60, and an E.N.E. gale raged. At 4.30 p.m. the direction of the wind changed, but the gale did not moderate, and the vessel ran before the wind, doing 32 miles in four hours under the staysail.
At 8 p.m. the gale increased; heavy seas were shipped, and the cabin was deluged.
One big sea lifted the davits clean up, and carried away a large surf boat. All the lockers were wrenched off the decks, and carried away, also everything moveable about the deck. The vessel was hove-to all Thursday.
Captain Probert speaks highly of the sea-going qualities of his craft.
