A SENSATIONAL STORY.
(By Telegraph,—Own Correspondent.) WELLINGTON, this day. A report was current to-night that the steamers Rotomahana and Zealandi had come unpleasantly near, to colliding with one another off Pencarrow Head this morning, but inquiries show that the story was at least greatly exaggerated.
The Zealandia left Lyttelton first, and was overtaken by the Rotomahana wben close to the Heads at about sis o'clock this morning. Exactly what happened the passengers did not discover, but the Rotomahana stopped and then went full speed astern., the Zealandia being then, it was alleged, close under her bows.
The sensational part of the story is discredited by the officers of the Rotoanahana, who state that the two steamers were not within half a mile of each other, and that there was never the slightest danger of a collision. Captain Manning simply slowed his engines or nearing the Heads, and as the steering gear stuck he had afterwards to stop the engines After drifting in perfect safety for about an hour, ana not being able to fix up the steam steering-gear he came on into port and berthed the Rotomahana safely shortly after seven o'clock.
