BREACHES OF THE STAMPS ACT.
_ In the PoUce Court this morning, before Mr B. W. Dyer, S.M., F..8. Winstone pleaded guilty, through his counsel, Mr Thorne, to six charges of committing breaches of the Stamps Act. Three similar informations were heard against J. S. Dickey, in connection with __► same facts. Mr Thorne said the offences lay in not having the stamps properly and effectively cancelled as provided by law. The defendant had made no attempt whatever to evade the provisions of the Act.
Tbe facts against Dickey were similar, as he was acting as clerk.
Mr Dyer said there were technical errors in the cancellation of the stamps, and a certain element of carelessness, but aa far as he could see there had been no intention to defraud the revenue. Winstone would be fined £1 and 47/- costs, and Dickey £1 and 21/- costs, on the first informations, and convictions would be recorded in the others. "It cannot be too widely known," concluded Mr Dyer, "that the proper and effective way to cancel a stamp is to place on it the initials and true date. If this was realised by business men, these cases would not occur."
