BUILDING IN AUCKLAND.

SOME CREDITABLE WORK. Judging by. the numerous fine structures in course of erection in th e city land suburbs, the commercial progxSk of Anddand is in no danger of slacked ing. some oi the works recently in- • apected by a representative of the "Star" ■ , would be considered as ornamental to cities many times the size oi Auckland, j and show that outward appearance has ! i i>een considered an important factor in i choosing the designs. Many of the build- ! ings are being fitted in the most up-to- | date fashion, and with the most modern mechanical improvements that money •can procure, CUSTOMS-STREET WEST. ! Two fine blocks are in course of erection in Customs-street West, between federal and Hobson-streets. one for Messrs. Langguth and Co., and the other for Mr. Jagusch. Both will be of somewh.it similar design on the Custonra-su-eet frontage, which is to be constructed of red -and buff brick, with cement lacings. Each will consist of five storeys, I one oi these being the basement, -while the ground floor will have but «ix feet of its elevation above the level of the street. The large cellar accommodation has been rendered possible by the peculiar topographical nature of the allotments. The height of each building will be GO feet from the floor of the basement to the roof, and 53 feet from street to parapet. The ground floor of Langguth and Company's building will be devoted to offices, the back portion utilised as a gum store, and the remainder as a warehouse for general merchandised The building in erection for Mr. Jagusch. trill be used as a rattan furniture factory, the ground floor being subdivided for offices. The estimated cost of both buildings is £12,000, and Mr. W. Hutx-hison, the contractor, expects to complete his engagement in six weeks' time. Mr Mahoney is the architect for the construction of both blocks. ELLIOTT-STREET: The Albert Brewery, in Elliott-street, is undergoing considerable additions and improvements, the one-storey portion being raised to five, thus making the -whole building a uniform height and design. j Mr Mahoney, the architect for this work, I estimates the cost at about £4000. QUAY-STREET. When the large additions to the Nori them Roller Milling Company's build--1 ings are completed. Auckland will possess i its first ferro-conciete structure of the ■ kind. This place is intended almost I solely as a granary. It will consist of four storeys, the frontage to Quay-stre->t i being 102 feet, with a depth of 85 feet j back to the railway station. The roof I will be flat, and made of concrete I in fact, floors, walls, storey posts, stair- | c-ases will be all of the same material. lOn the Quay-street frontage three cart j docks will be provided. An efficient system of ventilation will supply each floor with the purest of air. The finishings will consist of cement, inside and out. Mr Wiseman, who designed the buildings, estimates that the Ferro-Concrete Company should complete its contract in six weeks' time. The total cost will be something like f 8000. The erection of the Ferry buildings on I the site of the old Northcote Tee, is ! shortly to be proceeded with. This handsome five-storied structure, with its fine central tower, should materially add to the imposing appearance of Quay-street. A two-storey building at the eastern end of the street is under construction for Messrs. J. Ryan and Co., as additions to \ their already large premises. The work j will be of brick and stucco, and should be finished at the end of two months. : Mr Wade is the architect for the con- ' strnction of this block. : ALBERT STREET. i Near the V.M.C.A. Hall a '' fine warehouse is being built for ' Messrs. J. Wiseman and Co.. by Mr. J. * T. Julian, contractor. Mr. A. Wiseman ' iis the designing architect The building ; will consist of four storeys, one of which '' lis the basement. The ground floor will ' he devoted to offices and warehouses. ' while the two above will be used for the" s manufacture of saddlery, etc The c building, which is to be of brick and J i cement, will be out oT the contractor's ' j hands by November next. The cost will be about £SOOO. I A large, warehouse consisting of three storeys and basement is being erected for j Messrs. Hopgood and Company, spice merchants, etc. This block, which has ' a frontage to Albert and Moore-streets, • will be constructed of brick and stucco. I The architect for this work is Mr. Wade. ' WELLESLEY STREET. ] The plans for the new Train- 1 ing College will shortly be i completed, and a start made with the ' building, which is to be constructed of i brick and stucco. There are three storeys, including the basement, which J contains a fine swimming bath. The i other floors are devoted to the various ; class and lecture rooms, a library and a I museum being provided in the upper { storey. Ths building is to be completed j early in the new year, and* will cost I about £8000. The plans are in pre- - paration by Mr. Wiseman. 1 KARANGAHAPE ROAD. A 3-storey block of buildings j in brick and cement is shortly J to be erected at the corner of I Queen-street and KLarangahape-road for j the trustees of the Baptist Tabernacle j Church. The plans, which are being I prepared by Mr. Wiseman, show that, for J the main part, the buildings will he j devoted to shops and offices for leasing i purposes. '1 Several other structures in erection in * Pitt-street and Karangahape-road show that, in a few months' time, very little > space will be left for building purposes 1 in this district. t V V
