TAXIMETER CAB FARES.
Bd. a Mile in London,
LONDON, March 16. Mr. Gladstone has fixed the taximeter cab fares in London at eightpence a mile. Some 400 instruments are now ready. [The original proposal was to charge 6d. a mile, the existing minimum fare in Central London being two miles for a shilling. The taximeter is compulsory on motor-cabs and optional on horsedrawn cabs. In both Berlin and Paris there are 8500 cabs with their automatic fare recorders. The taximeter is a securely closed and sealed metal box containing mechanism actuated by a flexible shaft connected with a wheel of the vehicle, in the same manner as the speedometer upon a motor-car. It is within plain view of the passenger, a number of apertures in which appear figures showing the amount payable at any time. A small lever, with a metal flag bearing the word "Free" stands upright upon it when the cab is disengaged.]
