QUEENSLAND FRUIT FLY.
PORTION OF NAVUA'S ORANGES CONDEMNED. Tha steamer Navua, -which arrived from the Islands yesterday, brought only a small shipment of oranges from the Friendly Group in consequence of a cable dispatched via Fiji by the importers in Auckland, advising shippers of the stringent action being taken by the Government with regard to fruit infected with the Queensland fly. The Navua's shipmeut of oranges amounted to 107 cases, whereas under ordinary circumstances she would have had about 3000 cases. When the oranges were examined by Major T. Broun and his assistant, it was discovered .that thirty-five cases were infected, and these were accordingly condemned, being then sent to the city destructor to be burnt. The remaining 72 cases contained beautiful oranges, and those were passed. It is estimated that the loss per case on the condemned fruit is about 15/, which is borne by the shippers. The Vanua landed a large quantity of pineapples, which were infected with the mealy and they have to be fumigated before they can be passed.
