AUSTRALIAN FOOTBALL LEAGUE. The annual mee.tlug of the Australian Football Association was held in the Sports Club rooms last evening, Mr. C. Sexton presiding over an attendance of b'.rween 50 and 60 members. It was decided to amend ' the name to "■ The Australian Football League of Auckland." Each of the three winners of the events at the opening carnival last season waa presented with a handsome walking-stick, .the following being the winners: Long kick, B. Sandford; place-kicking at goal, E. L. McKean; and running with the ball, W. B. Forster. The animal report showed that a satisfactory season had been passed, and stated that the Klngsland cricket ground had been offered for the eomihg season. The conductor and musical director was Mr. J. F. Bennett (organist of Knox Church. Parnell I. whilst Mr. Basil Buddie presided at the organ. Tbe minister. Rev. Ivo Bertram. M.A.. delivered an eloquent sermon, choosing as The topic of his subject "The Fruits of Autumn— A collection was taken up in aid of church alterations. AUCKLAND PEACE ASSOCIATION. A lecture, entitled " A Military Training, and "Where it Failed to Hold Me." was given before a moderately large audience at it he Friends' Meetiug-house, Wakefleldstreet. last night, by Mr. E. A. Annett. who Is visiting Auckland as a deputation from the English Society of Friends. Mr. H. Dearsley. presideut "of .the Auckland branch of the International Peace and Arbitration Society, presided. The lecturer stated that he was the son of an army officer, and his xralning was thoroughly on military lines. In -college and the barrack-room he had found it extremely difficult to live a pure, wholesome life, and there were few Christians in the army. He protested against the indiscriminate barracking of men together, and to support his contention that army life was bad for the individual quated " General" Booth, who declared that 20 per cent of the submerged tenth in London tj.ere once ln the army. As to the righteousness of war, !he said that after his conversion to Chrls- | tianity he became convinced, without hearI ing the views of peace propagandists, that J war was wrong, and that no '"hristiau could fight. In individuals it was deemed wrong to settle disputes by blows, and this should apply with equal force to nations. While the social and economic arguments appealed to him. he was more concerned with the Gospel point of view. A discussion followed, and the .ectnrer was accorded a hearty vote of thanks. REMUERA ROAD BOARD. The Remuera Boad Board met last night. Present : Messrs. C. Ransom (acting chairman i. J. S. Dickson. F. B. Wlnstone. and jD. Fallon. A deputation asked thaT Grand Vice-road be formed. Mr. H. H. Metcalf. I engineer, reported tbe estimated coßt at £3 50. As the residents offered to contribute : one-fourth to cost, the Board decided to | have plans prepared for the work. The ! Charitable Aid Board forwarded intimation I that tbe Remuera Board contribution towards the Infectious Diseases Hospital was £33 12/2. Accounts totalling £:-!29 7/to were passed for payment, the general account showing a debit of £646 8/2. CAMBRIDGE ROAD BOARD. At a meeting of the Cambridge Borough Council held last Thursday. Mr. H. Bell received his appointment as captain of the fire brigade. The tender of Mr. G. H. Palmer for gorse-cutring on rhe Karapiro reserves was accepted. A discussion ensued as to the site of the proposed gas works, the committee set up to act recommending one on tbe borough reserve near the water- ! works pumping station, and that the prei sent pumping station be removed to tbe j proposed gas works site. The Council api proved of the recommendations. PROTESTANT DEFENCE ASSOCIATION. i The second annual meeting of the AnckProTincial Protestant Defence Association was held in the Protestant Hall. Newton, on Friday. The annual report, read by | the secretary, showed that progress had i been made since the society's formation, i and the treasnr-er's statement showed ' a -credit balance of £4 9/9. The : following resolution was passed : I " That the branches of the association be discontinued and return to the cenI tral body."
