ARNST WINS SYDNEY THOUSAND.

SYDNEY, March 23. The race for the Sydney Thousand, one m__SE, the -greatest cycling event in Australasia,, was decided in the pre--sence of a great crowd. The result was as follows:—r R. Arnst (New Zealand), 75yds 1 Walter Hutt (Germany), scratch 2 A. E. Payne (N.S.W.). 90yd5.... 3 The weather was fine, and the track in good condition. Thirty-five thousand people were present. There were 11 starters. The back-barkers were Rutt and Meyer (Germany) and Clark (Victoria). The Germans made the pace terrific, and had overhauled the front bunch when a lap and a-quarter had been negotiated. From thence to the last lap it was a great struggle. Rutt gradually improved his position. Arnst led into the last.lap, and keeping up a splendid sprint throughout beat Rutt by three parts of a length, amidst tremendous enthusiasm. The cheering lasted for several minutes. The winner was carried off the track ! shoulder high. The race was the finest ever witnessed on the track. I The time was lm. 54 3-55., and the -race was run against a stiff breeze. 1 (Received 10.8 a.m.) SYDNEY, this day. The finish for the Sydney Thousand was most exciting, the first six riders being so close together that the proverbial blanket would almost have covered them. Arnst's final sprint was splendidly sustained, and a plucky effort. The great pacing effort of the world-famed sprnter Rutt to catch the front-rankers told against him when it came to the push. He beat Payne for second place by only half a wheel. (Received 10.21 ajn.) j SYDNEY, this day.
