__-_________-_•___-_____. The departure of the s.s. Zealandia for Gisborne and Southern ports has been postponed till 7 o'clock to-night. The sale is reported of the fine yacht Volunteer to Mr C. Henning, of Fiji. The Volunteer will sail for Suva shortly; she is the largest ya-cht in Auckland. The Volunteer was owned by Mr Alex. Alison, by whom she was sold to Mr Henning. who has also placed an order with Mr Chas. Bailey, jun.. for a 20-ton yacht, which is to be fitted with an oil engine. The new boat is to be completed and ready for sea about the eld of this year. | Some seven or eight firemen belong- ! ing to the mail steamer Sonoma which sailed for Sydney to-day, missed their passages. They had been up the town and arrived on the wharf sometime after the Sonoma had sailed, having evidently been under a misapprehension as to the time of the vessel's departure. A rubber film glove, the feature of which is its antiseptic qualities, has been devised for surgeons. The idea, consists of immersing the hands in a weak solution of gutta-percha in benzine or acetone or applying the solution to the skin of the patient. The purpose of the film is to seal the surfaces of either the hands or skin with an insoluble, impervious and practically imperceptible pellicle, which j will not allow the secretions of the skin Ito escape, and will not admit blood, pus, !or secretions into the crevices of the skin. I Such a protective measure for surgeons 'is preferable to working with rubber i gloves, inasmuch as the 3ense of touch lor pliability of the skin is not impaired ! i". any way, as is the case when detachI -lie glove* an used.
