m — THE WAITEMATA SEAT. A number of friends of Mr G. L. Peaeocke have forwarded a protest to the central executive of the New Zealand Liberal and Labour Federation at Wellington against the selection of Mr Cecil Clinkarr] as the Government candidate for the Waitemata seat at the forthcoming general election. The grounds set out in support of the protest are that the selection was made by too few in each district to be a fair reflection of I he general feeling. As only 35 voted at Devonport out of a population of 3000. while at Birkenhead only ?.0 voted, those protesting contend that the test was not a fair one. The Premier, who is head of the Federation in the colony, has not so far confirmed the acceptance of Mr Clinkard, pending consideration of the protest. As far as the two candidates themselves arc concerned, they agreed prior to the ballot being taken to abide by ib» daaiaiou arrived at.
