EXPENDITURE ON SCHOOLS.
HALF A MILLION OF MONEY. SPENT BY IRRESPONSIBLE BOARDSCOMMITTEES ENTITLED TO MORE RESPECT. ißy Telegraph.—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, this day. At the opening of the new Shannon school the Premier, speaking of administration by Education Boards, remarked upon the incongruity of Parliament and the colony having no control over Boards that were expending half a million of money. There were, he said, buildings all over the colony in a deplorable state of disrepair. Hus*e sums were voted hy Parliament year by year, but some Boards devoted" this money to other purposes. The whole system wanted recasting, and the matter was being considered by the Government. As for the appointment of teachers, the whole responsibility should be in the bands of committees, or greater respect should be shown committees than at present. If there was any dispute there should be some kind of superior tribunal to decide as between Board and j committee.
