SALT WATER SPRING.
45 MILES FROM THE OCEAN.
VALUABLE DISCOVERY AT MATA-
(By Telegrapn.—Own Correspondent.)
WELLINGTON, this day
When the North Island main trunk railway line was being constructed at Mataroa, which is some eight miles north of Taitiape. a spring of salt water was discovered. The spring, which bubbled up on a bank Lv the railway reserve a few feet above a fresh water stream, has formed a pool of some three or four feet in diameter and four feet or five feet deep, which has recently been covered by the Public Works Department. The water, which is very salt and very clear, smells and tastes very much like kelp, yet the spring is right inland. It is situated 45 miles in n direct line from the ocean, and is about 1700 ft above sea level. The water has been in some demand amongst settlers as a medicine, and one sufferer from a kidney complaint has acknowledged relief from its use. Mr. H. Lundieu, Crown Lands Ranger, brought a bottle of the water from the spring before the Land Board, and the Government Analyst is to be asked to analyse the water to find out its medicinal properties
