FIRE AT NEWMARKET.
SUSPECTED INCENDIARISM.
A mysterious fire in Manukau-road last night destroyed the residence of Mr Gannon. Very shortly after the alarm was given, the Parnell Fire Brigade, under Captain Cowan, arrived on the scene of the conflagration, but it was impossible to save either house or furniture, as the flames had secured too strong a hold. Tlie owner and occupier has been out of town since Monday, and his daughter has visited the place since, her last visit being on Wednesday, when there was nothing to suggest the outbreak of a fire- No reason whatever can be assigned for the outbreak, and incendiarism is suspected. A large crowd collected to witness the fire, and the Parnell, Newmarket, and Remuera trams were delayed for a .short space because of the hose being laid across the track. The insurances on the house and furniture are not to be ascertained until tlie return of Mr Gannon.
