ENGINE DRIVERS' UNION.
DEPUTATION TO MR HALL-JONES. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, Wednesday. Mr Hall-Jones, the Minister in charge of the Inspection of Machinery Department, was interviewed to-day bj- i-cpresentatives of the Wellington Engine-drivers' Union, who requested that the size of boilers for which a certificated driver should be required be reduced from 14iu to Bin. The Minister said any amendment of the Act would have to stand over till next session. The deputation also urged that the provisions of : the Act with regard to the amount of pressure on a boiler were being contravened, and they wanted inspectors to be appointed. The Minister did not receive the prooosal with favour, pointing out that it would require about 1000 inspectors to do what was -asked. Engine-drivers could be. of great service to the Department in giving information, and the Department could then take action, apart altogether from the union.
