THE KARANGAHAKE ACCIDENT.

ADDITIONAL PARTICUIiARS. j (By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent) PAEROA, this day. The accident in the railway tunnel at Karangahake .yesterday morning, which ■was briefly reported yesterday, caused a great sensation locally. 'It appears that Ings and Shaw, the meg. concerned, went, to work in the tunnel at eight as usual, and had been at •work hut a few minutes when a fall of earth from the side 'ot the wall above their heads at the bottom of the tunnel broke loose and crashed down on- them, falling about ten feet. Ings was partially buried, and Shaw was struck by j the debris, a man named Carrick, who was working a few yards away, escaping uninjured. The men at work in the other part of the tunnel rushed to the assistance of the injured men, removing the earth from them quickly. Dr. Craig had, in the meantime, been summoned, and when he arrived Ings was still alive, but rapidly succumbing to his injuries. 1 His leg was broken, and his back was I also severely injured. The doctor was lin attendance on him till he died at ten I o'clock. Shaw had one of his legs broklen in two places, and his head was cut about. He was removed to the Thames Hospital about 11 o'clock by special train. No cause can he assigned for the fall jof earth, as there was every indication j that the place was quite safe. Both men i injured were experienced workers and careful miners. Ings was a Tasmanian, aged about and unmarried. Shaw is the son of Mr. E. Shaw (who himself was injured in the gunpowder explosion at Karangahake two months ago). He is a well-known volunteer, and served in the Boer war. He also went Home -with the Coronation contingent. ■' \ '
