(By Telegraph - l'ress AssoriatKni.) WELLINGTON, this clay. Three scholarships given by Mr. Douglas McLean in memory of his father, the late Sir Donald McLean, have just been awarded. The senior scholarship has been won by J. P. Ferris, of Te Ante College, and the junior scholarships by Mahauuriki Te Wharu. of Tokaanu, and Tupara Kingi, of Waerengaahika, Poverty Bay. Each scholarship is tenable at Te Aute College, and is worth £35 a year. DUNEDIN, this day. In a test case brought at Mosgiel before Mr Carew, S.M., a Taieri farmer was fined 40/ and costs under the Noxious Weeds Act, for not clearing the Californian thistle off his land. At the inquest to-day on Mary Cook, who died at the hospital on the 7 th, the verdict returned was that the cause of death was blood-poisoning, resulting from an illegal operation performed by some person or persons unknown. WESTPORT. this day. Mr. Carnegie has authorised the Borough Council to draw for a gift of £2000 for library buildings as the work proceeds. The Governor and Premier to-day visited Karamea settlement, north of Westport. WANGANUI, this day. Welcome rain has fallen during the past two days. Lightning last night was the most vivid seen here for years.
