THE FISCAL QUESTION.
LONDON, February 12 Mr. Lyttelton, the Colonial Secretary stated in a speech that there has not been a single case of a British workman I*. . ing finally refused permission to land in Australia. So few cases of refusal arose under contract labour that the Govern merit was not justified in refusing to sanction Commonwealth legisktion on that account. Mr. Lyttelton stated that' the Government intends to support those Unionists who honestly supported their , fiscal programme, even if their personal J opinion went beyond the Government no- ' licy. He warmly resented the charm that Mr Chamberlain was actuated by meanness or sordidness and twitted the Opposition with being responsible for the . imposition of 5 per cent, import duties as regards India. The Opposition were trying to kill a policy by calling it bad names.
