(Received 10.16 a.m.) SYDNEY, this day. Mr P. N. Russell, who endowed the School of Engineering in Sydney University with £ 50,000, has offered another fifty thousand towards providing free scholarships for apprentices engaged in the engineering shops in the State, and for the extension of the teaching of electrical engineering, on condition that the Government spends within three years £25,000 on the necessary buildings to accommodate the increasing number of scholars. REMARKABLE CURE OF A LEPER. (Received 10.25 a.m.) i PERTH, this day. The doctors attending a white leper for the last twelve months report that the activity of the disease has disappeared, and the man no longer shows signs of leprosy, and is no longer infectious. The Colonial Secretary states that fie was practically cured by the use of ehalmugra oil. EXCITING EXPERIENCE OF A STEAMER. SYDNEY, February 9. The steamer Age, which has arrived from Port Pirie. encountered a hurricane on the Victorian coast. A gigantic sea broke close to the vessel. It is estimated that it was 100 feet high. It descended on the vessel with tremendous force, and swept her from end to end, throwing her almost on her beam ends. The vessel righted so suddenly that the funnel was torn from its fastenings and crashed on the rail, wrecking a boat. Several of the crew narrowly escaped. The vessel came to Sydney under easy steam. MR. IRVINE RESIGNS. MELBOURNE, February 9. The Hon. W. H. Irvine has resigned the Premiership owing to ill-heaith. His medical adviser urged immediate retirement from politics, and the cessation of private practice. He is advised to take a long sea voyage. He is suffering from nervous breakdown. Mr. Bent has been summoned to re-form the Ministry. CHAMBERLAIN'S SECRETARY IN AUSTRALIA. TO ASCERTAIN COMMONWEALTH FEELING. (Received 9.10 a.m.) PERTH, this day. Lord Monkbretton, private secretary to Mr Chamberlain, has arrived here. The object of his visit is to ascertain the feeling of the Commonwealth with regard to preferential trade.
