POLICE COURT.—THIS DAY.
(Before Mr T. Hutchison, S.M.) Given a Chance. —Benjamin Reston, aged 20, came up for sentence on a charge of stealing a stiit of clothes, value 39/6. from the Riverhead steamer Vivid. The Probation Officer had furnished a report, and His Worship told Reston that he appeared to be an uncontrollable lad. There was a possibility of his mending his ways, as he had never been convicted before, and if he would leave the town he would be convicted and ordered to come up for sentence if called upon within three months. Reston promised to take the magistrate's advice. Alleged Disorderly House.—Florrie Scott, defended by Mr J. R. Reed, pleaded not guilty to a charge of keeping a disorderly house in Hobson-street. Several constables and neighbours were called to testify to what apparently went on in the house, and Constable Cox, anticipating a possible defence, said he had made inquiries about a man who was alleged to be keeping the defendant. This man said that he had not seen her for- a month, and did not know where she was living at present. In order to complete the case for the prosecution, and to call witnesses for the defence, the case was adjourned until February 22, accused being allowed bail upon her own recognisances.
