Abundant evidence was forthcoming that th" raiv occupied longer by over Usee. Under tbe circum stances, will the official time be accepted for future reference purposes?

Some whose knowledge of racing usages is limited, and whose sense of jusrice°iu such matters is not comm°ndable. were found arguing against allowing luchcape's rider to be weighed with the weights that had been seeh by scores of people slip from that gelding's back after the finish of the hurdle race at Takapuna. It was pleasing to see the stewards do the right thing. We will suppose that tbe rider of Khaina had come off after passing the post. Would the same people have objected to his jockey being weighed iv? Perhaps they might have done. Some people will quibble over anything-. Khama's win was very popular, and Hall rode a fine race on him. as did Hart on luchcape. On Saturday the lastnamed, who has done all his race riding over obstacles on Inehcape. rode that gelding- nicely in the Steeplechase.

A racing judge writing in "Badminton Magazine," emphasizes the uncertainty of anyone but the man in the box picking the winner iv a close finish. Angles spoil judgment of spectators, and even these riding in a race cannot tell exactly where the winning post is. Jockey George Fordham kuew this difficulty, and invited a doubted to run gently, or even walk, up the middle c.f the course and try to put a stick in the ground exactly in a line with the two posts. Every time the stick wap a long way out. and subsequent experimenters have obtained the same result. In Englaud there Is said to be one dead heat ln every Ou races.

It will, of course, be weeks before he is able to get about again—very bad luck for him. seeing that the autumu racing at Catilfield, Flemington, and Randwlek is within measurable distance. There is a valuable lot of horses In his stable at Miner's Rest' at the present time. Including F.J.A., Sweet Nell, Cmlr. tsyivnrme, anu Paul Pry, not to mention Tlemos, Class, Hautnnve, United States, Fairy States, Annotate, Aurleulus, Royal Oak. and Pliable.— "Referee," January 27th.

The Taranaki .Tor-key Club's Second Summer Meeting takes place on February lotli it ii ii llth. The acceptances for the various events fell due ou Monday There are nine left in the (.'up. Tradewlnd's name appeared through mistake Both the top-weight Convoy anil Romeo are Included. Of the pair we have to judge their form through other horses, and Ihe best line to take is through Gladsome, whom they have each Ip.m-ii defeated by. Borneo (8.1) failed to concede Gladsome (7.0) Olbs lv Uie Summer Cup. Ii miles, at the A.R.C. Meeting. His connections were disappointed and his rider considered him unlucky In the race. Romeo iS.th won the Auckland R.C. Handicap. 1J miles, by live lengths from a fair held. Convoy was handicapped to receive l;;lbs from Gladsome, but, carrying lOlbs h's*. was second to That Ully in the Wellington Cup. 15 miles, and second the next day, carrying 181b.s less than the filly over a mile and a-quarter. which is supposed to be Convoy's favour!' c distance. Gladsome was admitted to be in rare form at Elierstle, but may have been even fitter at Wellington. 1 think it will be admitted that Romeo was susceptible of improvement, and his public form looked better than that of Convoy. It must be allowed that his owner has nothing to complain of at his treatment, through that gelding. Gladsome on th.- day she received Olbs from him. woiild have had no show had she been asked to concede lSlbs instead, as she did lo Convoy at Wellington In the R.C. Handicap. In that .ace, however, she was a bit luckr. Both lit and well. Romeo is iikelv to beat Convoy lv a true run race, aud ou their public showings Ghoorka. with a horseman who can hold him. should have a good chance with Convoy at a difference of U'Jlbs. looking at Manawatu as well as Wellington form. Ghoorka, however, Is not a good stayer at best, and Romeo will give hini 171l>« unless he shapes better than he did at Wellington. Tradewind at his best would have an outside chance, but his name has appeared as an acceptor in mistake. Mara, as fit as he was ln the VYanganui Cup, would have a show, but recent form, although lit is now going well on the tracks at Ellerslie, does not point to him beating Romeo. Heroism, for the reason that he is one of the sort that time would have assisted, may have a chance. Ma-o Is useful and consistent, but has a c-otivract to tax his full capabilities, and Liable, though he may be improved on Raiigitikei form, is another that may be Just a bit outclassed Tupaxa has so far not shown any form of note to reeomnieud him, though lie may run well A filly like Sally Port, bred on' racing lines, with only 0.10 to carry. may trouble the bean: of them If she goes fit to the post. Shrapnel has only to be well to j;*ve a good account of himself in the events in which he engaged, but may want racing into form. Trying to get him ready for the New Zealand Cup knocked him out of time. He r»a a fair race, however, in October last ln the Wellington Handicap, and shorter distances should be in his line.
