The late Charles T. Kelly, of New Plymouth, had an eventful career. Tie had obtained a master's certificate upon the New Zealand Shipping Company's steamers, and he -was for some time second officer on'the Eastern Extension Cable Company's ship Sherard Osborne. He went to Taranaki to recuperate, and decided to leave the sea, eventually joining the Government Survey Department.
