ESCAPE OF A PRISONER.
SENSATIONAL BOLT FROM DETECTIVES. Two of the Auckland detectives had an unfortunate experience this morning, a prisoner bolting after he had been arrested, and succeeding in escaping. Acting upon a warrant issued in Christehurch, the officers visited a city boardinghouse about six o'clock, and found their man. He was quite willing to submit to arrest, and the handcuff was only placed on one hand. One detective waited while the other brought a cab, and the prisoner took this opportunity to bolt for liberty- The remaining detective, an active member of the force, gave chase, but without gaining on his arry. He then tried to "wing" Hin with a revolver, firing two shots, which were ineffective, and the prisoner got clear away J unharmed. He hap not yet been re-arrested. The fugitive had not been caught at three o'clock this afternoon, though a large number of police were searching throughout the clay. The man evaded the detective by runn.ng into O'Hare's stable, off Victoria-street, removing some old boarding and reaching a yard at the back. This manoeuvre enabled him to get out of the detective's sight, I and the officer was completely baffled. The man is wanted by the police for I alleged thefts at Christchuruh. Both I hi", hands were handcuffed when he was first apprehended, but the "bracelets" were old-fashioned, and. he slipped them off one hand.
