COX'S CREEK DRAINAGE
THE HEALTH DEPARTMENT MOVES
At the City Council last night the dangerous state of the drainage into Cox's Creek was brought under the notice of the council. Dr. Makgill, district health officer, drew attention to the pollution of 'the gullies discharging into Cox's Creek, caused by the drainage from houses in John, Oliphant and Vermont streets. The sewers from these streets end in open ditches, and the outfalls are most offensive, in his opinion, and as a large school has been built recently near by, and dwellings are rapidly increasing in number over the neighbourhood, he considers it necessary for the public safety that these gullies shall be properly sewered. The town clerk read a memo attached by the city engineer to the effect that this work was included in the drainage estimate, and could be carried out under the next £10,000 loan.
The matter was referred to the Streets and Sanitary Committee.
