RAWLINGS' SCHOLARSHIPS.
A discussion took place at: the meeting of the Ponsonby School Committee last evening upon the fact that there were not sufficient applicants' from public children to enable Ka.w_.ng_ scholarships to be granted this year.- The fact was mentioned thai these scholarships could not be awarded unless there were at least 20 applicants from five of the public schools, and as only 19 entered, the trustees could not do anything in the matter. These scholarships are tenable for three years, and entitle the winner to free tuition at cither the Prince Albert College, Auckland Grammar School, St. John's College, or Ring's College, with £ 10 per annum,- payable quarterly, towards school -liaintenanee. The applicants must be under 12 years of age, and the sons of poor parents, within the Auckland district. The trustees can also make further grants in special cases if deemed advisable, for the purchase of books. After the matter had been discussed, it was-Resolved on the motion of Mr Parr, seconded by Mr Gregory, "that the Committee thank the .trustees for the full information supplied, and consider it a dvisa.ble iv. the interests of parents and pupils thai such information lie published: also that this Committee is of opinion that it should be quite possible for the Head Masters' .-^.sociation at its meetings to. ascertain how many pupils each is sending up. and consequently if the minimum of 20 is likely 1o be obtained."
