A PARNELL COMPLAINT
Mr P. M. Hansen wrote to the Newmarket Borough Council, which met last night, in reply to a complaint from the town clerk in reference to the condition of Manukau-road, near St. Mary's. Mr Hansen said the Tramway Company's contractors were of opinion that the whole trouble was caused by lack of proper road formation outside the portion which had been maintained by the Tramway Company. Mr Hansen thought that the borough had no reason to complain of the condition of the street caused by their own neglect. The letter was received. Another letter re the condition of Alpha-road., where the conduit pipes have been laid, was received from. Mr Hansen, who stated that Alpha-road was in no w rorse condition now than when the excavations were commenced. Mr Wood ridiculed this statement. He said there seemed to be an effort on the part of the Tramway Company t.o place all responsibility on the contractors, with whom the council had had nothing to do. He moved, "That the council intimate toMr Hansen that he was expected to put Alpha-road in as good a condition as it was before the conduits were laid." This was carried. The Mayor moved that the Tramway Company be asked to agree to pay for metal and cost of spreading to be laid on Manukau-road, 18 inches on each side of the tram lines, when the council is forming the remaining portion of the road. The motion was carried.
