FATAL ACCIDENT.
(By, Telegraph.—Press Association.) >
DUNEDIN, Tuesday.
A cart, being driven to Port Chal« mers last night by an elderly man named Fitzgerald, appears to have" fallen over a cliff a distance of 60ft* near the railway line below. When the first train was coming to town this morning, Guard Lojie, on approaching St. Leonard's, saw lying in the water at the foot of the cliff an unusual mass, which proved to consist of a man, cart and horse. The man was found on top of the cart which was upside down, and his right leg was broken. The horse was still-' in the shafts, and had an ugly gash/ on the shoulder. Fitzgerald was taken on board the train and conveyed to the hospital, and immediately, on' reaching there succumbed from the injuries sustained, and subsequent exposure.
It appears from the statement of Alfred Perry, who was with Fitzgerald, that they had some drink at liavensbourne Hotel. At St. Leonard's embankment, Perry states, the horse suddenly shied, and fell over the side of the embankment. He managed to save himself, but did not go down to see if the old man was hurt. He says he knocked at the doors of some houses, but, receiving no reply, had walked home to Port Chalmers. According to the statement of Mrs Smith, deceased's daughter, Perry; knocked at her door, and asked if the! old man had got home yet. When a reply in the negative was given, he gave, no information about the accident. .-.".... ,j
