SCENERY CONSERVATION SOCIETY.
The committee of tho Auckland Scenery Conservation Society met in the Legal Chambers yesterday. Mr H. B. Morton presided, and there were also present Col. Burton, Messrs E. \V. Peyton, A. Alien, D. Hay, Atkinson, Dr. 11. Haines, W. H. Churton, Ward, J. Mitchell, and P. Holt (secretary).
On tho motion of Mr Allom it was decided, "That the proposed erection of a kiosk on the summit, of Mount Eden is worthy of consideration, and that the matter be referred to the Mount Eden sub-committee for inquiry and report."— Colgnel Burton considered that nothing in the nature of a "button" should bo placed on -the hill.—Mr Hay suggested the planting of a few pohutakawas on the top of the! hill.—The Chairman said he ti-olud oppose the erection of anything that would be visible from a distance on the mountain. He suggested that any shelter erected should be put 'inside the lip of the crater.
Mr Allom reported that he had been Informed by Mr Udy, Chairman of the Mt. Eden Road Board, that a number of pinus insignis trees were to be removed from the hill, and rep'aced by native trees. The Board would be prepared to consider any recommendations from the society on the matter of tree-planting.— The matter was referred to the Mount Eden siiD-committee for consideration.
The condition of the trees in Jervois Rcmd, Ponsonby, was reported on by Mr Allom, who sTafp.d that those between Curran and Wallace streets gave evidence of great neglect—Tt was decided, to refer the matter to the City Council.
The sub-committee appointed to consider the matter of the improvement of St Barnabas' Point eav? an exhaustive report, recommending that the inrervention, of the society was called for to prevent a magnificent point of vantage from being blocked by buildings. They therefore recommended that the matter be Drought before the City Council, the Parne'l" Borough Council, and the Harbour Board; that the Parnell Council be asked to "lease the St. Barnabas' Church from the trustees, and from the Harbour Ro^rd che hisrh land lying to the north, and that the Harbour Board be asked to give a strip of land to make Selwyn Terrace 6Gft wide: that the Harbour Board be approached to induce thP.m to lay out a wide esplanade along the sea frontage to Mechanics' Bay, and a road Kfift long thence to Alpha Road, before they lease any of their sections. RugaesHons for the beautifiontion of the reserve were also made.—The report was adopted, and a sub-committee was appointed to endeavour to give effect to the resolutions.
