MELBOURNE, February 22

The match between Victoria and jlaclaren's team was begun to-day. The weather was perfect. Gunn, Jessop and Barnes stood out of the English team. Worrall won the toss and batted. The Victorian captain had a meteoric career and Armstrong and MacAlister returned to the pavilion in succession without altering the total. Warne, who opened with "Worrall, batted steadily. Layer joined him, and when he had added 13 retired, temporarily hurt. Stuckey fell to Braund without scoring. Four wickets for 31. Warne gave a hot chance, but Blythe failed to take it. JleLeod partnered Warne, but was thrown out with half a dozen to his credit. Five wickets for 49. McMichael, the next man in, after -getting a fourer, gave Jones a chance. Six wickets for 53. Layer then resumed^ batting and play gi-ew brisk. "VVarne scoring quickly the century was up ior one hour and fifty minutes' play, and the partnership was marked by attractive cricket. Layer was disposed of for 35, and the remaining batsmen made a poor stand. Wkirne carried his bat.

Maclaren and Jones opened the innings for the Englishmen. Both were missed after scoring- a few runs by Saunders in the slips, and then rattled up the runs . quickly. Jones, with 22 up, ended the partnership by lifting Layer to Worrall. One wicket for 42. Quaife came next and play was particularly dull for a time. The scores are: — VICTORIA;—First Innings.
