THE PRICE OF MEAT.
(To the Editor.)
Sir, —I hope the suuject of the high price of meat will not be allowed to drop till the butchers have been compelled, in justice to the public, to lower their prices. Your correspondent of February 17th rightly says ttiat the monopoly should be broken up, and I for one should be glad to join in supporting a co-operative business. Why should the price of meat have doubled in less than five years? Are not butchers notoriously the wealthiest of shopkeepers, because they are not content with moderate profits? The cost of living in this new land is now higher than in the Old Country, and bids fair to increase year by year, which ought not to be. Few people would care to leave England for this colony, unless in the hope of finding- the struggle of life less severe. ■ —I am, etc.,
AN ENGLISHWOMAN,
