RUSSELL WHARF ON FIRE.
(By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.)
RUSSELL, this day.
Great excitement was caused at five o'clock yesterday morning, when it was discovered that the Runsell wharf was on fire. The outbreak was discovered early by Mr E. Cook, who gave the alarm. In a few minutes ». bucket brigade was formed, by which.' means the fire was soon extinguished. ' It is thought the fire originated through some one throwing a match down after lighting a pip. Several planks and one bearer in the wharfinger's office were very much dam-> aged, and one goods shed slightly. The fire had apparently been smouldering for some hours before it broke out. Fortunately it was discovered before it got a good hold, otherwise both goods sheds and a large portion of the wharf would have been destroyed. The damage is estimated at about £20, and the ■wharf is injured in the National office.
