A clerical gentleman on a visit to the lake district came upon a man who had been fishing ;ill day witnout success.

"What are you fishing for?" asked the minister, after he bad stood watching him a few minutes. The man, seeing his Interlocutor was a clergyman, answered— "I ana fishing for the devil, sir." "And what are you baiting with?" asked the reverend gentleman, laughing. "I am baiting with parsons and lawyers," said the man, somewhat .snappishly. "Well, I

am afraid you won't catch the old gentleman with them," returned the clergyman.

"Well, 1 don't care a fig for that," growled the angler, "if 1 can only drown the

bait.
