Lsaid: "Gentlemen.—lt is with very sin-f feere regret I have to inform you that 1 |oui"'beloved Sovereign, Queen Victoria,! [has departed this life. Whilst we mourn her departure from our midst,1 [we cannot' but feel that t"he nation's loss has been her eternal gain. No 'one can have lived the life which ?he lived without receiving the reword which our common Father has promised for those who by the consist[ency of their lives He lias counted worthy to receive it. The purity of, her life, her simplicity, her devotion to duty, and her humility, had so endeared her to the world that her! death will be mourned by its teeming! millions as no other death ever has] been. Her life was an example ■worthy! of the world's imitation, for the world! is purified not so much by actions, but more by nobleness of life, and tlie nobleness of "her magnificent life was ever shown by its consistency, clearness of purpose, and its quiet but ceaseless energy. With Her Majesty duty was the first consideration, and peer juid peasant her unwearied cai*e. Before moving' the adjournment of the Council 1 desire to move the following motion: 'The Mayor and Councillors of the City °f Auckland desire to express t*he deep sorrow felt by all members of the community in the great loss which has befallen the nation byi the death of Her Most Gracious Majesty Queen Victoria, and to present the loyal and respectful sympathy and heartfelt condolence o£ the citizens of Auckland to their Majesties the King and Qxieen and the Boyal Family in their bereavement. That the foregoing resolution be recorded in Hie minutes of the Council, and that His Excellency the Governor be respectfully requested to forward the same to the Secretary of State.'" The motion wag seconded by Cr. Kidd, and carried unanimously, the adjournment being until Monday evenIng at the same hour. .
