WELLINGTON, this day THE SOUTHERN CROSS.
There, seems to be every prospect of the Southern Cross being re-employed in the Pacific island trade.
MINISTERS' MOVEMENTS,
The Hon. C. H. Mills has returned from Blenheim, and Mr Blow, UnderSecretary for Public Works, is back from the West Coast, via Christchurch. The Hon. J. Walker, Minister of Education, will, I have no'doubt, spend the Christmas and New Year's holidays in Christcriurch. The Premier will leave Kumara for Christchurch on Wednesday to attend the Jubilee Celebrations, and will come on. to Wellington tabourb the 12th. The Hon.. Hall-Jones returned from the West Coast districts last night, Tlie Hon.. J. McGowan will leave for Auckland and the Thames about tbe 22nd. Advices from the South state that tho Hon. Jno. McKenzie continues to improve. INSPECTOR OF MINES. The Waihi branch of the Thames Miners' Union has sent a letter to the Minister of Mines, thanking him for having been chiefly instrumental in passing the Mining -Act AmendmentAct, which provides that any tyro members rnaiy be appointed by the Union to inspect a mine in regard to its safety. * TRADE WITH AFRICA. An alteration has been, made in the official invitation tenders for steamers to trade with South African ports, the tonnage being stated at from 3000 to 4000 tons.
