DEATH OF AS OLD SOLDIEE,

NEW PLYMOUTH, this day
There died in the Old Men's Home here last night William Baker, aged 95. Deceased was a member of the crew of H.M.S. Asia at \he battle of Navarino. He was also in the battle 'of St. Vincent, and took part in the first China war—lß4o-2. He then <came to Wellington in the ship Hazard. He volunteered for fhe forlorn hope: at "Owaiwai under Philpott. Baker was wounded, and left the service at tbe end of 1845, having served 26 years under four sovereignst. During the Maori wars in Taranaki he served.ia, the militia. . ■

Information was received in townlast night of the death at Pahiatua W Mr A. H. Ross, senior, an old 'Otago settler. Deceased was for several years Chairman of the Otago Harbour Board, and Mayor of Dunedin, and also sat several sessions in the House of Representatives as member for Roslyn. ...
